As a general rule of thumb, one cubic yard of bark mulch will cover an area measuring about 100 square feet. Most landscape professionals recommend a depth of about 3-inches thick. If you’re adding a layer of top dressing to an area that was previously mulched, you may wish to use a little less.
How to Measure
To calculate the amount of mulch you’ll need, measure the length and width of the area you wish to cover. Remember if you pace it out or use meters, you’ll need to convert your calculations to feet.
Multiply square feet ( Length X Width) by the number of inches deep you want in product, then you divide that number by 324 to get the total number of yards needed.
Length X Width 12' X 30' = 360' Sq. Ft.
Depth of 2" in product 360' X 2" = 720' Sq. Ft
720 / 324 = 2.22 yards of product
